How to Choose a Reliable SIF Investment Advisor

Putting ₹10 lakh into a new and relatively complex investment category deserves more care than selecting a fund from a performance table. A capable SIF investment advisor should help you understand the strategy, its risks and its place in your portfolio before discussing expected returns.

Specialised Investment Funds, or SIFs, were introduced under SEBI’s regulatory framework in 2025. They sit within the mutual fund structure but can use more advanced strategies. SEBI permits an SIF strategy to take exposure of up to 25% of its net assets in eligible exchange-traded derivatives for purposes other than hedging and portfolio rebalancing.

That flexibility can help a fund manager take long and short positions. It can also create risks that an investor may not face in a conventional diversified mutual fund.

Why SIF Guidance Requires Specialist Knowledge

The minimum investment threshold is ₹10 lakh at the PAN level across the investment strategies offered by the concerned SIF. Accredited investors are exempt from this threshold.

The amount alone does not make someone suitable for an SIF. The decision should also consider:

  • Existing exposure to equity, debt and alternative assets
  • Capacity to tolerate losses
  • Need for liquidity
  • Investment horizon
  • Tax position
  • Understanding of derivatives
  • Dependence on the invested money for near-term goals

A person with ₹10 lakh available but no emergency reserve may be less suitable than someone with a well-diversified ₹2 crore portfolio.

Advisor and Distributor Are Not the Same

A SEBI-registered investment adviser normally provides fee-based advice under the applicable regulatory framework. An AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor facilitates investments and may earn commission through regular plans.

Neither model is automatically better. What matters is knowing which service you are receiving, how the intermediary is compensated and whether any conflict of interest exists.

Investors comparing mutual fund distributors in Mumbai should verify the distributor’s ARN, service model and SIF-related qualifications. From July 2026, SEBI introduced the NISM Series V-D certification for people engaged in selling or distributing SIF products, subject to transitional provisions for existing qualified distributors.

Questions to Ask Before Proceeding

Ask the professional these questions:

  1. Are you acting as an investment adviser or distributor?
  2. How will you be paid?
  3. Why is this SIF suitable for my portfolio?
  4. What can cause the strategy to underperform?
  5. How liquid is the investment?
  6. What are the expense ratio and exit-load provisions?
  7. Which benchmark should be used?
  8. How often will my portfolio be reviewed?

Be cautious if the conversation focuses only on recent NAV growth, tax efficiency or return potential. SIFs have limited operating history in India, so short-term performance cannot show how a strategy may behave across a complete market cycle.

The right professional will discuss downside risk as openly as return potential. You should leave the meeting knowing what you own, why you own it and what could go wrong.
